What a smart move by PeeewforTheirFrenz.org. Now they don't have to be bothered with those losers who aren't going to win and waste all their time throwing out entries from the non-frenz (if they ever really looked). It isn't that different except they are being more honest about the exclusivity of the whole thing. We got a call from the Peeeew people, aren't we important!!!!!! Yippee!!! They told us how this is going to be so much better for them and we agree. All of the same people will win anyway so who cares? Go to their site to read all the bull, we mean information.
We will be on the secret panel of the 30 local insiders who will be making the first cut. Whoops, I guess it isn't a secret anymore. Who else has "a deep knowledge of artists working in the region" as stated in the official Peeew Press Release? We don't only have a knowledge of the scene, we form it by excluding good artists and propping up our frenz, yippee!! All you oldster painters, fogetaboutit. All you cool new media young Sklar artists, we got you covered!!

Yay!
Like somebody cares? Anyone making satire cares a lot :-)
Of course Harry and I care, we care about our frenz and ourselves. We told the people at the Peeeew Buddyship to open the categories up to bloggers and coops and even more young people so we can all get some of that dough. Before we didn't qualify and that was just plain poop. I am sure you like the new rules, they were made for you. And we will help by showing your work, giving it a gold star, and mentioning your gallery every chance we get while leaving out all the artists who do good work!!!!! Yippee!!!!
this is a turkey town.
I don't believe that this award has ever been fair, and yes I'm bitter about it. The local panelists and curators have always knocked out work that wasn't from their support system, well before the so called "international/national panelists ever get to see it.
That's not quality control that's nepotism. I used to believe that if artists from outside of this area, saw my work that I might actually have a shot. Then I was told by an insider that if you weren't connected to a scene here (ala 1026) institution or a curator that you had almost no shot of advancing beyond the preliminary round.
This year we've had "carpet baggers" like Ryan Trecartin leave his beloved New Orleans, Post-Katrina. If a massive hurricane hit my beloved Philadelphia, I'd be in the trenches digging her out and rebuilding.
I wouldn't run to where the money was to establish residency, so that I could be a shoe -in to win the $60,000, but that's me. Oh, I'm sorry, I'll bet he's going to donate the money to "Habitat for Humanity".
His video work is repulsive. Cartoon caricatures, masquerading as "identity/gender politics". Think "Teletubies" and that Japanese Anime that made all of those kids in Japan vomit and get migraines. His installations are average at best, but you know what...he's the flavor of the moment.
His videos, ape Matthew Barney, like a child (which he is, by the way) dancing around in his mother or father's clothing....Oh, once again sorry...that is one of his videos!!
Ryan just lectured at Tyler. Do you know what his advice to the students was..? Get low APR credit cards while you're in school and run up your debt, so that you can live the dream... Not an original idea by the way, Spike Lee paid for "She's gotta Have it" by maxing out his credit cards...and look..he made it big.
So....let me get this right ...when something like .5% of the artist population, actually gets famous, then you can easily pay back that debt. Sage advice!!! Most of these art school graduates will be slaving away at "Dilbert-like" jobs trying to repay that credit debt, for years to come. Livin' the dream!!!!
I'll tell you something else. I was told by a friend, a Pew winner, that the Pew money was basically a "Here's $50-60,000, to not leave Philadelphia"
(A stay and develop here award). I've heard that from two of my friends that have won Pews. Do you think Trecartin is going to stay here?
If you ask me, there should be a 5 year minimum residency required to compete for the award. That would almost guarantee that it would only go to local artists who have been part of the fabric of Philadelphia. Do you think anybody would be willing to "carpet bag" for that long?
The problem is..the Pew doesn't want that. It wants to be able to claim "art stars" as their own, regardless of the price.
I liken the Pew to Seasonal Depression.
Used to be every 4 years I would get the letter of rejection.
I have already apologized in advance to my friends and family who must now endure my bitching and moaning every year when I am not nominated or nominated and not selected.
PS... I don't think any 1026-er has ever been chosen. Which is unbelievable. Rebecca Westcott got it, but I don't think she was officially in 1026.

you can watch video of previous winners (2007-2008) on mindtv.org search "Pew"
As a loser, I especially enjoy the gripping Matthew Cox's video of X-Ray art and people eating.
